WHITING – Pasadena Road was closed for several hours while police investigated an accident involving an overturned tractor trailer dump truck Tuesday.
Police said 61-year-old Alfonso Calderon-Chinchil of Rahway was driving a 2006 Peterbilt tractor with a dump-style trailer when he lost control while trying to negotiate a curve on Pasadena Road by Red Oak Grove Road. At 7:39 a.m. He overcorrected and jack-knifed, which caused his fully loaded trailer to overturn.
Twenty-four tons of concrete spilled into the roadway, in addition to diesel fuel and hydraulic fluid.
Calderon-Chinchil was transported to Community Medical Center in Toms River after complaining of head pain. He was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Firefighters from the Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, EMTs from Quality Medical Transport and paramedics from MONOC assisted Manchester Township Police. Also assisting were members of the Berkeley Hazmat Team, the Ocean County Road Department and the Ocean County Health Department.
It appears speed and driver error caused the accident, although the crash is still under investigation by Patrolman Jesse Hoydis of the department’s Traffic Safety Unit.
