EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — An Ocean County man is accused of driving drunk, crashing into a utility pole and then fleeing the scene early Sunday, leaving his seriously injured passenger behind, authorities said.

Zykyeem Jenkins, 24, of Manchester, Ocean County, crashed shortly before 5:45 a.m. near the intersection of Black Horse Pike and Venice Avenue in the West Atlantic City section of Egg Harbor Township, police said.

After the crash, Jenkins ran from the scene on foot, according to authorities. Police said he attempted to hide in the bed of a pickup truck whose driver had stopped to help and also tried to take tools from the truck before officers found and arrested him. Jenkins was charged with assault by auto, burglary of a motor vehicle, hindering apprehension and driving while intoxicated.

He was also issued multiple additional motor vehicle summonses, police said. Both Jenkins and his passenger, who is also 24, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police said the passenger suffered serious injuries.
