MANCHESTER – A motorcyclist is recovering from his injuries after colliding with three deer that were crossing the road.

The crash took place at around 7:40 p.m. on May 25, police said. Jose Vergara Suarez, 18, of Manchester, was heading north on Route 539 near Harry Wright Boulevard when three deer entered the roadway from the west.

After colliding with them, he fell off the motorcycle and was laying in the roadway when police arrived. His 2021 Suzuki GSXR 750 slid for several hundred feet, sheering off the base of a traffic sign, before coming to rest at the base of a utility pole.

Suarez was transported by helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for internal injuries but later discharged. The deer died from the crash.

The Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, Whiting Volunteer Fire Police, Manchester Emergency Medical Services, and paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson assisted Manchester Police at the scene. The crash is being investigated by Sgt. Ian Bole of the Manchester Police Traffic Safety Unit.
