Bicyclist In Critical Condition After Collision

  MANCHESTER – A 61-year-old bicyclist is in critical condition after colliding with an attached utility trailer being pulled by a Dodge Ram on Saturday morning, police said.

  Around 10:30 a.m., the bicyclist had entered the truck’s lane of travel at low speeds before hitting the side of the utility trailer, in the area of the Lacey Road near Manchester Boulevard, police said.

  The driver of the Dodge, 32-year-old Gregory Gianci Jr. of Waretown, was uninjured in the collision. The bicyclist, 61-year-old Joseph Kubiak of Whiting, was airlifted by Robert Wood Johnson Life Flight medevac helicopter to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where police said he was listed in critical condition.

  Police said that Kubiak was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and a possible medical episode prior to the impact is also being investigated.

  The road was closed for a brief period of time during the rescue efforts and investigation.

  Assisting at the scene were the Career Manchester Fire Department Squad 13, Whiting Volunteer Fire Department, Paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson Life Flight, and EMTs with the Manchester Emergency Medical Services.

  At this time, the crash remains under investigation by Sergeant Ian Bole of the Manchester Township Police Department Traffic Safety Unit.
