Teen Driver Charged With Fleeing After Fatally Striking Pedestrian

  BRICK – A 19-year-old was charged with leaving the scene after striking a pedestrian.

  Police said that Mark Carey, Jr., 19, of South Amboy was driving a 1999 Ford Explorer at around 9:15 a.m. on January 13. The truck hit a woman on the shoulder of the roadway near Route 35 South and Bay Avenue. The pedestrian later succumbed to injuries at Hackensack Meridian Ocean University Medical Center in Brick.

  Carey allegedly fled the scene but was tracked down by investigators. He was taken into custody at his home without incident.

  He was charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in the Death of Another, Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury or Death, Failing to Report an Accident, Reckless Driving, Careless Driving, and Failure to Maintain Lane of Travel.

  Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Brick Police Chief David Forrester thanked the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Brick Police, Bay Head Police, Lavallette Police, Seaside Heights Police, Seaside Park Police, Point Pleasant Beach Police, Lacey Township Police, Toms River Police, Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, Ocean County Vehicle Services Department and City of South Amboy Police Department, for their combined and collective assistance in connection with this investigation resulting in Carey’s arrest.

  Charges are merely accusations until proven in a court of law.
