BRICK – A Brick man was left critically injured after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Lavallette. After the accident, a GoFundMe was set up with a goal to raise $50,000 for the man.

The fundraiser was created by the man’s son, Shawn Philbin, who is asking for help during this tough time his dad is going through.

“On Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020, my dad, Tom, was out for a bike ride in Lavallette,” Shawn states in the GoFundMe. “During my Dad’s bike ride, he was struck by a car on RT 35. He was in the middle of the road, lying unconscious. When first responders arrived, they called in a helicopter to transport him to JSUMC. My Dad is currently in critical condition with severe injuries along with a brain bleed that is not stopping and is getting worse by the day,” Shawn said.

Shawn also writes that his father is suffering financially since losing his job due to COVID-19.

“My Dad has been going through one of the toughest times in his life in the past couple of months,” Shawn said.  “He lost his job because of the COVID-19 pandemic, thus losing his health insurance. At 60 years old, I want my dad to be comfortable both financially and physically. Sadly, doctors say it is likely he will suffer permanent brain damage from this freak accident.”

Currently, the fundraiser has raised over $12,688 out of the $50,000. If you would like to donate to the cause, the fundraiser can be found here: gofundme.com/f/g2np4-dad-in-critical-condition.
