BRICK — A rooftop fire forced the evacuation of the ALDI grocery store on Route 70 late Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Brick Township police dispatchers received a call at 4:57 p.m. from the store manager reporting smoke from the building. District 1 fire companies responded and quickly called a second alarm after flames were seen coming from the roof, according to the Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety.

Fire crews, assisted by mutual aid companies, contained the blaze to a rooftop HVAC unit. Minor roof damage was reported. The Ocean County Department of Health also responded, and the store remained closed for cleanup. Corporate officials said internal protocols must be met before reopening.

One firefighter was treated and released from Ocean University Medical Center for a minor injury. No other injuries were reported.

Fire Marshal Paul Matula is investigating the cause.

Officials credited store management for quickly evacuating customers and urged the public to follow directions from staff and emergency personnel during emergencies.
