BERKELEY – On a cold, clear evening, Veterans Park was transformed into a Winter Wonderland with twinkling lights, happy songs, and warm snacks.
A considerable amount of work went into making a holiday event for more than 100 residents to enjoy.
A trackless train took children around the park, past light-up and blow-up decorations of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.
A large tent was set up for vendors. Heaters kept it pretty comfortable, so people could talk to local businesses like home improvement contractors. There were also a number of artisans who were selling their own crafts, honey, and other goods. Badges were even on sale for the township’s beaches.
Food trucks sold specialties like zeppole and kettle corn, and you could also stop by the snack shack at the park.
These amenities started at 3 p.m., while everyone knew the tree lighting itself was to take place at 6 p.m. As the evening got close to this event, the Central Regional High School choir took to the stage and sang renditions of holiday classics.
When the choir wasn’t singing, the park’s sound system was pumping out beloved songs as well.

And then, just as Mariah Carey was getting into the chorus that we know so well, a siren cut through her song. The lights of a firetruck sparkled through the darkness from Veterans Boulevard. Young and old cheered and watched as the trucks made their way into the park.
Then, the music switched to “Here Comes Santa Claus” and then Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.”
Santa Claus stood in the bucket over the fire truck’s cab, waving to the crowd. You couldn’t hear his “ho ho ho” over the roar of the crowd.
He was soon joined by Mrs. Claus, and the two made their way to the bandstand, greeting people as they did.
Unfortunately, someone was waiting for them. Someone mean and green, who has all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile.
Yes, the Grinch attempted to steal Christmas, and worked the crowd as his song played. Fortunately, Santa made sure that even Grinches get presents, and his heart grew three sizes that day.
Afterward, families lined up to meet the trio for photos.
