Manitou Park’s Family Day Returns Celebrating 27 Years

BERKELEY – Manitou Park’s Family Day will return on August 13 from 12 to 8 p.m. at the 3rd Avenue Basketball courts.

About 30 years ago, Robert Taylor created a nonprofit organization “Unity Pride” which is designed for youth development with the community.

“I started a basketball program at Manitou Park in 1992 with one basketball court, no playground, and 100 people coming out to play. I started Family Day in 1995, 27 years ago. When I started this event, I wanted to bring the community together (all different races, religions and beliefs) for a good time! I wanted us to celebrate each other and give the kids something to look forward to. I wanted to create a safe place filled with so much joy, laughter and most importantly love,” Taylor said.

Family Day has since become an annual event that the community appreciates and supports. A GoFundMe was created this year to raise funds for the event. All of the proceeds will be going towards food, drinks, games, decorations, gift cards, school supplies and more.

Admission to the event is $10 and will include all day activities such as a limbo contest, hula-hoop contest, musical spots, hot shots 3-point contest, slam dunk contest and a talent show. Rides will be available from 1 to 5 p.m.

Local nonprofits and community organizations will be handing out school supplies, offering physicals and job opportunities.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. will be handing bookbags to kids while supplies last.
