BERKELEY – Police Detective Michael Tier has taken on a new leadership role in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, marking a significant milestone in his military career.

Major Tier officially assumed command of the 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry Regiment, part of the 28th Infantry Division, during a ceremony held at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on December 7.

The date coincided with the 278th anniversary of the battalion’s founding. The 1-111th Infantry traces its origins to Benjamin Franklin’s Associators, a volunteer militia formed in 1747 to protect Philadelphia. Over the years, the unit has served in major conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror. Most recently, the battalion completed a deployment to the Horn of Africa in 2024 and 2025.

Town officials praised Tier’s dedication and recognized the sacrifices that accompany military service, offering congratulations and best wishes as he steps into his new command.
