POINT PLEASANT — A 44-year-old borough man has been indicted on multiple charges involving child sexual abuse material allegedly obtained and created at a home that previously housed foster children, authorities said.
An Ocean County grand jury indicted John Olson on Sept. 9 on one count of distributing child sexual abuse material, four counts of manufacturing child sexual abuse material and one count of possessing child sexual abuse material, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced.
The investigation began after the New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received information from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding the online transmission of suspected child sexual abuse material.
Investigators traced the reported activity to an internet address connected to a Point Pleasant Borough home, according to the prosecutor’s office. Authorities alleged that a Kik Messenger account used by Olson uploaded and transmitted an illegal image.
Members of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Squad, Ocean County Regional SWAT Team and Point Pleasant Borough Police Department searched Olson’s home on Aug. 22, 2025, under a court-authorized warrant. Multiple electronic devices were confiscated.
During the investigation, detectives learned that the residence had previously operated as a foster home and contained cameras inside children’s bedrooms, authorities said.
Olson was initially charged with distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material before being taken to the Ocean County Jail.
A subsequent forensic review allegedly uncovered nude images of children on Olson’s cellphone. Investigators believe the images were captured by cameras installed in the bedrooms, according to the prosecutor’s office.
Olson was served with additional charges at the jail on Aug. 28, 2025. He was released from custody on Aug. 29, 2026, under New Jersey’s bail reform procedures, authorities said.
Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Shanon Chant-Berry presented the case to the grand jury. The prosecutor credited the county High Tech Crime Squad, Point Pleasant Borough police, the county SWAT team, the state Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children with assisting in the investigation.
The charges are accusations, and Olson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
