SOUTH TOMS RIVER – A South Toms River Police Department K9 is awaiting emergency surgery after suffering a sudden medical emergency during a training exercise Monday, authorities said.
K9 Loki was training with Sgt. Kosh in South Toms River when the medical emergency occurred. Loki was immediately taken to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in Toms River, where veterinary staff were able to initially stabilize him.
Police said the seriousness of Loki’s condition required additional advanced treatment. The department’s K9 handlers activated the K9 Kona Medevac Program, which helped arrange an emergency transport to Red Bank Veterinary Hospital.
Veterinary specialists evaluated Loki after his arrival and were able to further stabilize him. Police said Monday night that Loki was awaiting emergency surgery.
The department thanked the veterinary teams and numerous agencies and individuals who assisted, including the K9 Kona Medevac Program, New Jersey State Police, Ocean County Sheriff 911, Toms River Police Department, Toms River Police EMS IAFF Local 4846 and Tracy Connellan.
Police asked the community to keep Loki, Kosh and the department’s K9 Unit in their thoughts as Loki undergoes treatment.
