BRICK – The Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2026-2027 school year and made other adjustments to this year’s school schedule. A lot of these matters are typically approved and handled during the board of education’s reorganization meeting at the beginning of each year, which was on January 6th, however these matters still needed to be approved during this last meeting.
The Superintendent of Brick Township schools, Dr. Thomas Farrell, talked about the virtual meeting of the policy and planning committee and the work that went into crafting the 2026-2027 academic school year calendar.
Farrell broke down a little bit of the process that goes into making an academic calendar. He attended a meeting with other county superintendents in December. They then meet with the vocational schools.
The full 2026-2027 academic school year calendar includes staff orientation days on September 1-2, back-to-school day on September 3, school closings on November 5- 6 for a teachers convention, a winter break that spans from an early dismissal on December 23, until January 3, a four day Presidents Day weekend that starts on Friday, February 12 and spans until Monday the 15th, with the last day of school being on June 15. Farrell also noted that since the schedule does not have built-in inclement weather days, the first day before Presidents’ Day might be adjusted if they have to close schools due to inclement weather.
In addition to the adoption of the calendar, the meeting also saw the Board of Education accept gifts and donations from various organizations around the town. According to the agenda of the meeting, an organization of Brick alumni from the classes of 1989-1991 donated a lump sum of gift cards, with a value of over $2,000, to the Board of Education to help students whose families are struggling during the holidays. The next donation that was accepted by the Board during this meeting was the donation of Freckle Juice books from the Brick Elks Group 2151. Their total donations of the third-grade books are valued at $1,620.
The final donation accepted by the board during this meeting was a donation made by the Lake Riviera Parent Teacher Association to provide supplies for the school’s sensory room. That donation totaled $100 in value. The Board of Ed accepted all of these donations.
The board also accepted a grant award from Hackensack Meridian Health’s Mini Wellness Program that will go to Veterans Memorial Middle School. The grant itself is worth $1,500. One of the board members said that the acceptance of this grant was an effort to give the kids everything they possibly can since their education was impacted by COVID.
During the same meeting, they discussed the second reading of the policies listed on the meeting’s agenda. Those policies include R 2530 Resource Materials, P 2535 (M) Library Material, R 2535 (M) Library Material, P 9130 Public Complaints, R 9130 Public Complaints. A breakdown of what these policies entail specifically is available on the Board pf Educations website under meeting agendas.
The next Brick Board of Education meeting will take place on Thursday, February 22, at 6 p.m.
