WARETOWN – Two boats caught fire, and one drifted into a lagoon, fire company personnel reported.

The incident took place near Lagoon View and Marine Road. The chief and deputy chief of the Waretown Volunteer Fire Department responded, finding two boats on fire.

When the first fire truck arrived, the fire had burned through the ropes mooring one of the boats to a dock. The wind then took the boat and it drifted into the middle of the lagoon, according to a report by the fire company.

Being experienced in this kind of situation, crew members from Waretown and the New Jersey State Police marine unit secured the boat. One fire truck tapped a local hydrant and another parked on the other side of the lagoon to protect the other boats in the marina.

There were no injuries, firefighters said. The incident is being investigated by the Ocean County Fire Marshall’s Office and the state police. Waretown First Aid also responded to the site.
