HOWELL – The body of a man was found early Friday morning on the side of a heavily wooded Road in the township.

Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Public Information Officer Chris Swendemann said the body was found by “a third party around 3:15 a.m. on the side of Hurley Pond Road and Route 524.”

Swendemann said Howell Township Police were on the scene at 3:30 a.m. and that the department is working with the County Prosecutor’s Office on the case.

“We are investigating it as a suspicious death and possible homicide,” Swendemann said. He could not confirm the age of the man found nor the condition the body was found in though there have been reports that the man’s body was found in a state of considerable trauma.

Swendemann could not confirm reports that the man had possibly jumped out of his vehicle and that he may have been pursued by an attacker(s).

The area was shut down for several hours as law enforcement authorities examined the scene for their investigation.

Swendemann said the investigation is ongoing and could not say when further details might be released but that an update may be posted to the Prosecutor’s Office social media site when further information can be released.

WNBC-TV reports that the man appeared to have had his face hacked, a witness reported.
