I was recently hired to fill an administrative position vacated by a long-time, beloved employee. Since day one I have been told by my co-workers that I ‘have big shoes to fill.” Three months later and all I encounter is resistance to my way of doing things. How can I get my co-workers to stop comparing me to Ms. Big Shoes and cooperate?
Unfortunately, most people find change difficult and tend to resist, rather than accept it. Three months may seem like forever to you, but trust and respect take time to earn. You can’t stop the comparisons, but you can learn to ignore them. You were hired for your skill set, etc., so continue to be the professional that you are, and eventually your co-workers will come around.
